Mykonos - Delos - Day 7

This might have been our most amazing day yet! Our day began after breakfast at 9:15a when we left for the boat for The Archaeological Site of Delos. We had the most captivating day walking among the ruins with our local guide who was an archaeologist. Things are well preserved because the second floors of structures crumbled in time and with the sea winds sand filled the areas and actually looked like hills until the excavation began. Inhabitants lived on Delos since 2500 BC, the reached a peak at the 9th century BC, and by 69 BC after attacks and looting the island was abandoned. Excavations began in 1872, on the 6 square mile island and are still in progress. Since 30-35K people inhabited this place at it's peak, there is much more to excavate. One could spend all day here if you had the energy. After 3 hours of exploration we were ready to set course back to Mykonos for lunch. Delos is well worth the visit if you come to Mykonos. The structures, mosaics, building materials - everything is astonishing.

We had just about an hour to eat lunch and catch the tour bus back. However, other hotel shuttles run later if we miss it. We had a marvelous lunch at Kazarma. John had a huge Angus Burger that he brought back to the hotel and finished off in the evening. I had a lamb shank, plus we shared a Greek salad as we watched the water just in front of us. We made it to the tour bus on time and headed back to the hotel. After resting a bit we packed our suitcases and got ready to depart tomorrow. Three nights here went very quickly!

I am sure I haven't said enough about the wildflowers. The growth is just breathtaking, it reminds me of the super bloom we had in CA this year. We are told in two weeks this bloom will be over and things will be dry and brown. Delos is like a desert in the summer. It is hard to believe because the beautiful flowers have added so much to our visit. I guess it really is the perfect time to come to Greece, plus we miss the summer crowds and heat!
